In diving a buddy check refers to a pre-dive safety check in which divers examine each others equipment to ensure safety. At Deeper Dive Horizons, I use a similar principle when examining NEW medications that a patient is just prescribed (or are being considered to be prescribed) by their physicians. Prior to taking a medication, it is important to ensure that the medication will likely be safe and effective. I am in essence doing a second opinion, in order to avoid bad outcomes and reduce the risk of a "prescribing cascade" (a term that I will discuss with you once you choose a program or service). I look at factors such as age, dose, kidney and liver status, current medications (prescription and nonprescription), how the medication will be administered, and the typical drug side effects. This service replaces the "Sailing Home" service I use to offer, for patients released from the hospital. The buddy check is especially beneficial for patients who get discharged from the hospital with a bunch of new medications. The hospital discharge is a major point at which medication errors occur. The Buddy check is included in all my packages (1 for the snorkel dive, 6 for the rec dive and 12 for the deep dive). While this service can be offered as a standalone, it is more cost-effective to choose one of my comprehensive programs.
